Addressing both theoretical and practical aspects, the lab demystifies data transmission, fosters an understanding of addressing schemes, and introduces key applications like DNS and firewalls. With a focus on real-world scenarios, this lab provides an immersive learning experience, empowering beginners to confidently embark on their networking journey.

Lab Objectives

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of network fundamentals, including the identification of network topologies such as point-to-point, bus, star, ring, tree, mesh, or hybrid, along with a detailed examination of their components.
  • Explore Local Area Networks (LANs), Wireless LANs (WLANs), and Wide Area Networks (WANs) through simulated environments, facilitating a nuanced comprehension of the distinctions between each network type.
  • Familiarize participants with essential concepts such as hosts, network card types, Ethernet cables, cabling standards, CSMA/CD, MAC addresses, MAC tables, bits, bytes, and related topics.
  • Differentiate between hubs and switches by employing network simulations, offering a practical demonstration of their functionalities.
  • Implement VLANs and subnetting by following step-by-step guides within simulated scenarios.
  • Illustrate the process of data transmission encapsulation and decapsulation by analyzing frames and packets at various levels of the OSI model.
  • Introduce participants to IPv4/IPv6 addresses, covering both manual and dynamic addressing within a cohesive addressing scheme.
  • Explore key protocols, including DHCP, ARP, Neighbor Discovery Protocol, DHCPv6, and ICMP.
  • Develop proficiency in ICMP troubleshooting through realistic use cases.
  • Familiarize participants with UDP and TCP, understanding their roles in network communication.
  • Introduce DNS, SMTP, HTTP, TELNET, SSH, FTP, TFTP, and firewalls through hands-on applications and use cases.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve common issues in LANs and WLANs by replicating scenarios in simulations, applying best practices and a systematic methodology.
  • Learn to monitor LAN and WLAN connectivity, bandwidth, DNS, and other relevant parameters.
  • Acquire skills in using Wireshark to capture and analyze network traffic for diagnostic and optimization purposes.
  • Guide your understanding of the end-to-end network packet journey by following the ISO/OSI model layer by layer.
